How do I set a reduction target?

Setting a reduction target in TrackZero is the first step towards planning your carbon reduction strategy. This helps define clear sustainability goals and track progress over time.

You need at least one completed reporting year before you can set a target — see Measure.

Steps to set a reduction target

  1. Navigate to the Plan Section
    • Click on Plan at the top navigation bar.
    • From the Plan Overview page, select Set Target (or Edit Targets, if you already have one). This opens a single dialog covering both your near-term and long-term goals.
  2. Set a Baseline Year
    • Choose the completed reporting year your targets will be measured against.
  3. Enter Annual Business Growth
    • Input the expected annual percentage growth of your business, used to project future emissions as your business grows.
  4. Set a Near-Term Target
    • Choose a target year: 2030 or 2035.
    • Set a reduction percentage (%) for each scope:
      • Scope 1: Direct emissions from owned or controlled sources (e.g., company vehicles, on-site fuel combustion).
      • Scope 2: Indirect emissions from purchased electricity, heating, and cooling.
      • Scope 3: Indirect emissions from the supply chain, including transportation, waste, and procurement.
    • Note: Scope 1 and 2 emissions are generally within a company's control, while Scope 3 emissions depend on external factors like suppliers and customers.
  5. Set a Long-Term Target
    • Choose a target year: 2040, 2045, or 2050.
    • Set a reduction percentage for each scope. Reaching 90% or more on all three scopes marks your organisation as having a net zero target.
  6. Save Your Targets
    • Select Save to apply both targets at once.

Note: targets are set as a percentage reduction per scope, not an absolute tonnage figure.

What happens next?

  • TrackZero calculates the required reduction for every year between your baseline and each target year.
  • The Pathways chart on the Plan Overview page plots your actual emissions against your target trajectory for each scope, with a toggle to switch between your near-term and long-term view.
  • The Near Term and Long Term tabs each break this down further with a Target Emissions Per Year table, showing your actual emissions, target projection, and the delta between them for every year, alongside whether that year's target was met.

By following these steps, your organisation can set realistic carbon reduction targets and track improvements over time.
